News: Idols Judges Pick first Golden Ticket Winners!
21 contenders from KZN will compete at Sun City.

Idols judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana and Gareth Cliff blew into Durban on the back of Cyclone Irina yesterday [Tuesday, 6 March] to make or break the dreams of a medley of KZN singers who imagine themselves to be South Africa's next Idol. In the end 21 of the hopefuls left the ominous, nerve-wracking audition room with a coveted Golden Ticket – their pass to the next phase of the competition, the Top 100 at Sun City.

Randall, Unathi and Gareth’s first judging session of this season took place, fittingly enough, at the shark tank at uShaka Marine World – “the most scenic venue anyone has ever filmed Idols auditions in!” Unathi raved.

And the judges really got into the swing of things at uShaka, with Randall grinning from ear to ear when two bikini girls approach him for autographs and Gareth getting friendly with Arctocephalus Pusillus, or Jabulani the fur seal as he is more commonly known. But Gareth didn’t let on if, like Paul The Octopus, Jabulani had any prophesies about this year’s winner!

But that doesn’t mean they were as loving when it came to this year’s contestants. “We were stricter than ever this year, which means that only the best of the best made it through to Theatre Phase,” Unathi explained.

“We were looking forward to the Durban auditions because of the plethora of talent that we found here last year,” added Randall Abrahams. “Let’s just hope Irina didn’t blow all the good singers out to sea!”

“It was a rather slow start in the morning,” fellow judge Gareth Cliff admits, “but things picked up considerably after lunch. Who knew curry was good for the vocal chords?”

Next it will be Cape Town’s turn to impress the judges at the next Judges’ Auditions on Tuesday, 20 March.

Today’s Golden Ticket winners will join the other finalists from around the country at the gruelling Theatre Week in Sun City in April.

Season 8 of Idols is a co-production between M-Net and Mzansi Magic and will be broadcast on both channels from 3 June 2012.
