Artist Focus: Freshlyground
The band Freshlyground have been around since 2002 and since then, they have jumped from one success to another.

After being mentored by the band’s lead vocalist, Zolani, Melissa and Khaya had nothing but praise.

Khaya said: “I have seen Freshlground live on a number of occasions and she’s an amazing performer and getting her input on our song choices this week was incredible.” Melissa found it easy to connect with her mentor as they are both from the Eastern Cape, “and that’s where all the talent comes from,” Melissa added in jest.

Freshlyground’s debut album, Jika Jika, was released in 2003. Their second album, Nomvula sold 300 000 units. The band’s website says: “The success and broad appeal of the band was celebrated in November 2006 when Freshlyground won the MTV Europe Award in the category Best African Act.”

Fast forward to 2010 – when Freshlyground was chosen to co-perform the Official Song for the 2010 World Cup, “Waka Waka This Time For Africa” with Colombian superstar, Shakira. “To date ‘Waka Waka’ has sold well over 3 million singles and reached number one on several charts worldwide. The song is the most successful anthem in the history of the FIFA World Cup.”
